CBD Tinctures: A Complete Guide

With CBD products on the rise, there are an increasing amount of questions surrounding tinctures. As one of the more popular modes of delivery for CBD, tinctures are one of the most utilized forms of CBD. Here, we will discuss what CBD tinctures are, how they work and ways to select the best one to suit your needs.

What are CBD Tinctures and how are they made?

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid used for humans and pets. While supporting pain relief and relaxation, CBD has been considered by many to be a better alternative to narcotics and prescription medications. CBD can be derived from cannabis or the hemp plant. Because the concentrations are much higher in hemp, this is the best option for making edibles, tinctures, vape or topicals.

With tinctures specifically, the process begins with the harvesting of hemp plants. After harvesting, the plants undergo an extraction process. There are a variety of methods used for extraction. These methods include ethanol extraction and supercritical CO2 extraction. With the CO2 method, the hemp is passed through carbon dioxide that is set to low heat, high pressure. This particular method is the most preferred as it is the cleanest and leaves no chemical residue or toxins. That being the case, this is the most preferred extraction method. From the extraction process, a gooey and thick substance remains. This substance contains additional terpenes and cannabinoids and is also very rich in cannabidiol. (Terpenes are what give hemp, cannabis and other plants their aromas and flavors. These are considered a good thing and have been proven to provide therapeutic benefits.)

Depending on the manufacturers CBD preference, the extract may or may not undergo continued distillation or refinement. CBD isolate is considered the most refined type as all of the cannabinoids and terpenes are removed leaving pure CBD. Full spectrum CBD still contains the terpenes and cannabinoids, but does not contain materials such as chlorophyll or other plant materials.

Ways to take CBD Tinctures

CBD tinctures can be used in a variety of ways. Depending on preferences, there a few different options.

With Food or Beverages

Because of its consistency, tinctures can be easily added to food or drinks. It can be used in coffee, juice, a smoothie, etc. With food, you can add it to anything that you would use any other oil in: dressings, marinades, in soup, on fruit or vegetables, etc. However, it takes longer to notice the effects when added to food. The tincture will undergo the digestive process along with the food which can take up to an hour.

Under the Tongue

If you want to notice quicker results, try using the CBD oil under the tongue. Begin by shaking the bottle. Then fill the dropper to the preferred dose. Lift your tongue and empty the dropper right below it. Hold the CBD oil under your tongue for at least a minute. Then swallow. The membranes under the tongue allow for full absorption of the CBD compounds. From there, the CBD components flow straight to the bloodstream. Depending on the individual, effects can be noticed anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Tinctures

Because tinctures are discreet and easy to use,  they are the most preferred method of CBD consumption. They provide a fast delivery method- especially when used under the tongue. They can be used alone or made into a topical product as well. Dosing can be adjusted depending on the individuals preferences and needs. On days where symptoms are worse than normal, amounts can be increased slightly without any adverse side effects.

Because of its subtle and mild nature, there aren’t very obvious disadvantages to using CBD tinctures. For those that have trouble swallowing, tinctures may not be the best option. Consider a CBD vape instead. However, CBD tincture should not be used for vaping.

As with all CBD products, be sure to do your research for which tincture you are interested in purchasing. Pay attention to the active amount of CBD within the tincture. Double check the extraction method as well as the dosage suggestion and amount per bottle. Quality manufactures should also provide lab results that ensure purity, quality and potency.
